Celebrate National Give Something Away Day

Donate. Give to a Friend.  Surprise a Stranger.

I just heard on the radio that today, July 15 is National Give Something Away Day. I didn’t even know that was a thing but apparently, it has been around since 2015, at least in the US.  I love the idea so I am helping to spread the word.

Seems like a good day to pass on something to a new home.  It is a chance to show someone you care, clear something that no longer serves, or make a small gift to someone that you don’t know.  You can simplify your life AND make someone else happy with very little effort.  That is worth celebrating!

5 Ideas for Give Something Away Day

  • Give a friend an item of clothing or an accessory that you know that they will love.
  • Donate a box of items to a not-for-profit.  Be sure to check with organizations to see what is on their wish list – or to check what they are able – or unable – to use.
  • Make a meal (or buy one ready-made) and drop it to a neighbour who lives alone, or works long hours, or could just use some support.  If appropriate, you might make enough to sit and share the meal with them.
  • Fill a knapsack or purse with hygiene supplies, snacks, warm socks, and other items and give it to a homeless person.
  • Get the kids involved. Encourage them to select a book or toy that is in good shape and could bring joy to someone else.  It is a great way to learn caring and the joy of giving.

Glad to see you back Mary! I used today to clean out some toys that Lia has out grown and shared them with some neighbors. Have a lot more to go! LOL

I missed National Give Something Away Day.

My wife is a big advocate for minimalism, so she always asks me to get rid of things and give them away. It can be difficult to let go of things, even if you don’t need them. But I’ve found that it’s always worth it in the end.

You free up physical and mental space when you declutter your home and eliminate unnecessary items. You no longer have to worry about where to put things or keeping track of all your stuff.

Hi Mary, I appreciate the inspiration of giving you share in this post and all the different ways we can give. We are finishing up with a garage sale this weekend and will most likely be giving away or donating the left over items. Great idea on getting the kids involved. Every month, my family collects personal hygiene items to donate to our church for families in need. Thank you for sharing. Sending love.
